Horse Race Penwortham to Clare

On Friday last a few of the sporting inhabitants of this neighbourhood got up a race. Mr. Greigg, of the Clare Hotel, backed his horse against another to trot from Penwortham to Clare. I understand the match was won by Mr. Greigg’s horse, which performed the journey in 26 minutes. The parties then adjourned to the Stanley Flat Racecourse, where Mr. R. Bruce made a wager to run his horse against Mr. S. Jordan’s for £20 a side, the former winning by several lengths. The remaining day’s sport was kept up by hurry-skurry stakes and private matches.
